Corrosion is usually referred to as the degradation of the metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. When considered broadly, corrosion may be looked upon as the tendency of the metal to revert to its natural state similar to the oxide from which it was orginally smelted.
This is as short as I could make of this extremely complex subject. Hope it helps. Best wishes,

A little more ample definition, as per Nace Basic Corrosion Course:
Corrosion.: Is the detereoration of a substance (Usually a Metal), or its properties because of a reaction with its environment....... .....Furthermore the above definition recognizes the material others that metals may corrode. The deterioration of wood, ceramics, plastics, etc., must be also studied by the corrosion engineer and is included in the term Corrosion.
So after all this we can conclude that corrosion is the deterioration of a substance or its properties because of a reaction with the environment.
